About LA MAF: The Olde Curiosity Shoppe

The Olde Curiosity Shoppe

Based on the idea of a "Cabinet of Curiosities", or an old Dickensonian "Curiosity Shoppe", this room at the LA MAF is going to be one of my personal favorites. Here you will be walking into a whole environment, set up to feel as if you are stepping into an old Curio Shoppe from the 1800's.

Images will be printed, then framed in old vintage wood frames, and hung saloon-style on the walls. Cabinets and shelves will be filled with images printed on metal, then welded to pipes and stands to make mini-sculptures rather than prints on a wall, along with all manner of other strange presentations of the work. Mannequin's with iPad heads, old chests with mobile art-rigged contraptions inside may be found in the shoppe. Maybe an image of a specimen of a fly will be mounted on a metal rig, then placed under a magnifying glass or under a pair of goggles for proper viewing.

So this is it…the space where you get to be weird. Please add all your automatons, your disembodied hands, your mannequins with missing eyes, your scientific "specimens". Here is the place for all things strange, and weird, and old. All your steam-punk images. All your clock-work masterpieces.

If you are selected to have your work shown in this room, we will be finding all kinds of strange and odd and interesting ways to present the work, so it is a great chance to have your image turned into something more than just a print. Who knows, you may end up with a steam-punk sculpture to sell, featuring your image in some wild metal rig.

Over the past 2 years, I've seen so much work on IPA that would fit in to this kind of environment. So here is your chance. This group will only be open for a couple of weeks, but if you are someone making work that will fit into this space, I'm sure you already know it. So please take a quick look through your gallery and add in all the strange oddities, the off-beat, the "I don't know what the heck that is, but man, it's cool" type of work. And help us populate the LA MAFia "Olde Curiosity Shoppe."

We can't wait to see what you've got!

Submission deadline, July 15.
