grant recipient: CARLEIN VAN DER BEEK
username: carlein
country of origin: Holland
lead juror comments: I like the evidence of balance in this image: the strong diagonal of the arm balanced by the diagonals of the birdsâ wings; the clear white of the hand contrasted by the inky black shadows of the birds; the young womanâs outward stare pointing right; the top bird flying toward us while moving left; and just enough blurring of the face and hand to balance the motion of the birds in flight. Additionally, the iPhoneographer has merged the womanâs eyebrow with the tip of the birdâs wing...a nice way of connecting the woman to the bird.

1st runner up: NETTIE EDWARDS
username: lumilyon
country of origin: United Kingdom
lead juror comments: This photo makes us want more information about these young girls, alone in a station tunnel. Are they sisters on an outing to London? It might be summertime. They have no coats, dressed in Sunday best. They appear worried, somewhat uncomfortable. Is it wartime England? The older sibling protectively holds the hand of the younger child. The distortion heightens the narrative. The cropped frame puts the younger, more vulnerable child in the center, keeping us fixed on her expression, so unsure and doubtful. Then leading us into the dark passage.

2nd runner up: CINDY PATRICK
username: cpatrickphoto
country of origin: United States
lead juror comments: What I like about this is the detail of observation. Who looks at shoes and feet? I do. Bill Cunningham does. Not not enough of us really observe details. The iPhoneographer has taken an interest in the overlooked, the mundane. Great. Those lithesome legs, those flower-adorned slippers. Is that the gossamer netting of a tutu? Or are those the tired and worn slippers of an aging grandmother? Who knows? Either way, this is a tender image and magically placed high in the corner as if to float away.

About 2011 IPA MOBILE ART GRANT
Each day the boundaries of mobile art are pushed, expanded and explored. The creativity, intelligence and spirit of IPA have brought us together: it goes without saying the competition will be steep. So take this opportunity to challenge one another. Push harder. Discover more. Watching this community grow has been a daily inspiration - so it is an honor to start giving back. The 2011 IPA Mobile Art Grant will award $1000 to the artist with the best work. A spot in our Los Angeles 2012 exhibition and inclusion in a book of the best work of 2011 will also be awarded. IPA is a place to show your very best work. And now is the time to show it.
I've just been pointed to this portion of the Mobile Art Grant page by Jenbeez (thanks, Jen!) and am honored to be noted by Jane Deering along with Jimforaday and giorgopoliti. I've congratulated Carlein, Nettie, and Cindy individually and I can only echo the comments of so many in the stream here about the overall excellence of this site and of this competition. Cindy's citation of Eastwood's challenge to each of us is just spot on. I've always struggled with seeking fame or notoriety choosing instead to let it find me if it must, for the mere act of the creative arts is reward in itself.
My congratulations to each one who participated here, and to those who won my thanks for your inspiration and the creative drive you exhibit in your work and passion for the art of iPhoneography. And thanks to Daria and the IPA team for their commitment to providing such an outstanding platform.
The 2011 IPA Mobile Art Grant Awardees have been announced:
Grant Recipient: CARLEIN
First Runner Up: LUMILYON
Second Runner Up: CPATRICKPHOTO
The final awardees were selected by Jane Deering, a long time gallery owner, curator, and advocate of the arts who has been showing the work of established and emerging artists in the US and Europe for over a decade. Here, you will find one image from each awardee, selected by Jane for particular comment.
In addition, Jane has asked that the following be noted for excellence:
"Oh Winter's Day" by CLIX2020
"SeaGlass" by JIMFORADAY
"The Internal Struggle" by GIORGOPOLITI
"This was an exhilarating introduction to iPhoneography and the breadth of possibilities open to all who have a visual curiosity and are willing to explore new dimensions. Thank you to all the artists for their exceptional work, and to iPhoneArt for supporting this new platform!"
-Jane Deering
Please join us in our warm congratulations to the awardees, finalists, semi-finalists, honorable mentions, and all participants in this years grant.
And stay tuned for details regarding our upcoming book featuring much of the best mobile art of this past year, the testing and release of our iPrints Store, and our 2012 Los Angeles exhibition.
We will be reviewing ALL portfolios on IPA in the coming weeks in preparation for these events as well as a number of new features that will be available once our new site design is released. So make sure you have your best work on view...and keep up the great work. Keep challenging one another. Keep pushing yourselves. And keep reaching higher. Help us make 2012 even better, and we will keep finding new ways to support you.
Warm Regards,
Your iPhoneArt Team
(cue in the fanfare, prepare to open the chilled bottle of champas, ok drum roll...cue applause - ACTION!) Bravo Bravo Bravo. Where to begin? First a huge congratulations to Carlein - for your most deserving accolade and being an inspirational beacon of light with your work, your support to all artists and for the gift of storytelling. (*raises a glass to toast*) I would also like to congratulate the runners up and the honourable mentions of excellence (*raises glass and throws carnations in the air*) So proud of you all. Bravo and ENCORE ENCORE ENCORE (cue in the fossey dancers and fireworks*) X
Big congrats to the winners and to all finalists and participating!
Big congrats to all the deserving winners. You are all very engaging artists and are representative of the finest work produced in this exciting medium. This is but the beginning of your journey to rightful fame.... fortune wouldn't be too shabby either. Thrive on!!
Congratulations to winners and all great artists who participated and opened my eyes in front of an extraordinary world. Thank you
Congratulations to all the finalists!!! Your work is astounding and I am so honored to find myself in such awe-inspiring company and so humbled to see my work alongside your astonishing art!
Congratulations as well to all the semi-finalists and to every artist who entered this competition. I know there's a lot of disappointment, but I look down the list and see the names of so many amazing artists whose work could easily stand beside the finalists; so many who could easily be in the top 20 instead of me. Which brings me to a quote I would like to share:
In his acceptance speech after winning the Best Director Oscar for Million Dollar Baby, Clint Eastwood said: "There are a lot of great movies that have won the Academy Award, and a lot of great movies that haven't. You just do the best you can."
WE ARE ALL WINNERS!!! Winners because we do the best we can and share our best work and our passion for iPhoneography with each other every day, which is what makes IPA and every single IPA artist so special. Thank you... for sharing, for caring, and for always bringing your best -- which on most days simply blows me away. Your work has raised the bar for all who follow. I'm sure there will be many opportunities in 2012 for everyone to shine!
Lastly, I would like to express my deepest gratitude towards Daria, Nate, and Django... not just for putting this competition together every year, but for everything you do every day, behind the scenes, on your own time, to make IPA one of the most fantastic mobile art communities on the planet! I'm so proud to be a part of it. Thank you!!!
Best of luck to all the finalists!
Great words and big congratulations to you and all the other remaining artist, all of us who entered and everyone take part in and make up this amazing community of artists!!
There's not much more I can add that hasn't already been said. Congrats to the remaining artists & more importantly congratulations to every single artist who entered their work... row after row of artwork was of exceptional quality. Amazing & inspirational work by all... very proud & happy to be a part of such a great community. So very honoured & humbled!!!
Thank you!!
I can't add any more than has already been said about inspiration, friendship, talent, creativity and passion. I was a bit wobbly when I made the top 50. To be honest, I'm all over the place to be a finalist. There is so much wonderful work here and I am speechless and humbled to be on the same page as any IPA artist. Congratulations to everyone. We are all winners. And I had to break my January detox to celebrate.
Oh ok, that last bit was a lie...
OMG, did it feel good to let out a hearty laugh ... thanks, Tess! :-)
I would like to take a moment to thank the iPhoneArt team for creating the preeminent mobile art website and for their commitment to the pursuit of excellence, to thank the review panel for performing the impossible task of selecting from a group of richly talented artists and to thank all of the richly talented artist members for participating in Mobile Art Grant 2011. I am overwhelmed with gratitude and so very proud to be a part of this community. Congratulations to everyone!
WoW!!!
This is such an amazing body of work. There isn't one row that doesn't stop me. Congratulations to all!!!
Bravo!
(i wanted to write that in really big red letters)
Honoured, this is the only word I feel to say.
Honoured to be selected and to be part of this amazing group of talents.
Congratultions to all the artists for the stunning, inspiring works shown!
